Mane-taining Comfort: Managing Horse Allergies

Updated: Oct 20

Horses, like humans, can experience allergies that lead to discomfort and disrupt their daily routines. From airborne irritants to insect bites, allergies pose a common concern for many horse owners. In this post, we'll delve into the signs of allergies in horses and explore effective management strategies, including the advantages of bodywork.

Identifying Allergy Symptoms:

Look out for signs such as itching, skin irritation, hives, respiratory issues like coughing or wheezing, watery eyes, and gastrointestinal upset.

Managing Allergies:

1. Environmental Control: Keep stables clean, use dust-free bedding, and provide ample turnout in well-maintained pastures

2. Feed Management: Opt for low-dust hay and thoroughly check hay for any mold.

3. Insect Control: Use fly masks, sheets, and repellents to protect horses from insect bites. Opt for anti-bug natural repellents such as Lemon Grass, Tea Tree Oil, Peppermint, Eucalyptus with some Apple Cider Vinegar, and likely an oil base of mineral oil for added staying power.

4. Supplements: Consider supplements like omega-3 fatty acids for anti-inflammatory benefits, antioxidants to suppress free radical damage, and probiotics for hindgut health.

How Bodywork Can Help:

Bodywork techniques such as massage therapy and acupressure can alleviate muscle tension, reduce inflammation, and promote relaxation in horses with allergies. With proactive management, including environmental controls, careful feed management, supplements, and bodywork, you can help alleviate your horse's discomfort caused by allergies.
