As fall settles in, keep an eye out for common issues that can affect your dog’s comfort and health! 🐾
Allergies: The change in weather can bring new allergens like mould and fallen leaves. Ragweed season begins in early August and peaks in mid-September and October, before declining in November. Signs of runny eyes, brownish-red discoloration around their eyes and paws, as well as itching and sneezing, are signs of common allergies. These may not be caused just by pollen — they could also indicate food sensitivities.
Dry Skin: Cooler temps and indoor heating might lead to dry, flaky skin. Regular grooming and moisturizing can help.
Paw Care: Fallen leaves and dirt can irritate your dog's paws. As mentioned, a brownish-red colour around the paws and excessive licking could lead to inflammation. Please consult your veterinarian to rule out if the inflammation is caused by an allergy, parasite, nutritional deficiency such as zinc, secondary bacterial or yeast infection, or a foreign body such as a foxtail grass seed head, splinter, or ingrown hair.
Just like daily hoof cleaning, daily paw cleaning is also an essential part of grooming!
